Six hundred years in the future a nuclear winter endures. This never-ending winter has persisted hundreds of years longer then scientists predicted. Earth had been reduced to a smattering of cities and a small population all under the control of the Regalcy. The religious and political wars of the first half of the millennium, that left the surface of the earth in this perpetual winter, have given way to a neo socialist system where birthright indicates the transference of leadership, but the real power is wielded by corrupt political brokers.

The Artificial Life of Startrek

The Artificial Life of Startrek

The Star Trek series has inspired not only armchair fans, but also the researchers who are trying to better the human race, developing the devices of the future, and struggling to conquer space travel. The Star Trek series was also the inspiration for this book, which examines the artificial intelligences portrayed in the shows. The question we’ll be asking throughout this book is, “How do we get from where we are now to the point where we are able to create truly exceptional artificial beings such as Holodeck characters, Lieutenant Commander Data, and the Emergency Medical Hologram?”

Just received a nice 5 star review for Lost Souls totally out of the blue. (Get your copy on Amazon for just 99c)

Reviewed By Sherri Fulmer Moorer for Readers’ Favorite

Lost Souls by Penny de Byl is a thrilling novel about what happens when man decides to play with creation. The future proves that man's survival depends on venturing into outer space, and Biogen Corporation has found just the place to do it: Titan, a moon of Saturn. When Biogen Corporation decides to launch an experiment on survival and procreation through scientific means in Antarctica, it seems a logical step - until several donors for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) die at the moment of their child's birth. Australian police are stumped as they investigate spontaneous deaths. Meanwhile, the carefully selected research team faces an accident traveling to the Antarctic site that causes the loss of valuable specimens, forcing the doctors to modify the reproductive element of their experiment in order to save a project with fierce international competition.

Lost Souls is a perfect mix of my three favorite genres: science fiction, mystery, and religious/inspiration. Penny de Byl does an excellent job balancing the scientific experiments in Antarctica with the unfolding investigation in Sydney. It's a fast paced, thrilling read that will keep you on the edge of your seat with perfect twists and turns to keep the plot moving. While the plot contains religious overtones, it isn't "preachy" and is fair and balanced in presenting religious views mixed with the science and situations presented. Lost Souls is an excellent read that I highly recommend to anybody that likes science fiction or mystery, as it's wonderfully balanced and does a great job of moving between the science fiction and mystery story unfolding at both sites. The plot flows smoothly and works together to form an exciting picture at the end, which is quite a surprise. Give Lost Souls a read - you won't be disappointed!
